Bronze Age Horns

Existing ethnic instruments including the triton conch, wooden trumpets from the Amazon, African animal horns and the Australian didgeridoo provided the breakthrough to understanding how to play Bronze Age horns. The essential feature is an open mouthpiece which allows the entire length of the instrument to resonate a note.

The best results are attained by finding the natural internal pressure of the instrument and playing around it. Only then does the horn begin to produce the beautiful rich harmonics and overtones which make it unique. The sound is mellow, haunting and deeply evocative. Most of the surviving originals have a common tuning and relative pitch to each other.

In the Bronze Age, a two part clay mold with a central core was used to make horns.
