Jason: Hero or Celebrity?

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, and today, nearly everyone differs in his or her opinion of what exactly a hero is. There are some basic definitions that generally describe heroes, but as with anything, these descriptions are disputable. In the story of The Quest of the Golden Fleece, Jason is seen by many as a hero. It is true that Jason fits many of the descriptions of a hero, but today, in the 20th century, many question the possibility of Jason’s heroism.

The first characteristic Jason had, that would indicate the possibility of him being a hero is that he was supplied with friends and companions for company during the quest. Jason was helped on his quest by a number of people. The first being Aphrodite. Aphrodite called upon her son, cupid, to make Medea fall in love with Jason. Medea was known for her ability to work extremely powerful magic. Medea could assist Jason on his quest by being a companion and a sorceress. During the quest Medea was loyal to Jason, but after his success, Jason, refused to acknowledge her existence. He was ungrateful for what Aphrodite, Cupid, and Medea has done for him.

Jason also fits the characteristic of heroism stating that the hero descends into darkness and is not the same after emerging from the darkness. Jason found himself in a very dark and lonely time during his quest, however, when he succeeded he became rather arrogant. He became self centered and ungrateful for the assistance that others had provided during his perilous journey. He seemingly forgot that he wouldn’t have succeeded, if it had not been for the gracious help of his loyal friends. The golden fleece that Jason sought after was merely a symbol of what the quest was really about. This is another distinct characteristic of a hero. Actually, what Jason was seeking was the kingdom once belonging to Phrixus. Phrixus had said, before he died, that who ever recovered the golden fleece of the ram that saved him from being victim of sacrificial practices would have sovereign rule of his kingdom. The fleece actually represents the kingdom Jason longed for.

As is indicated above, Jason appears to fit many of the characteristics of a hero. However, in the 20th century, people are beginning to question their own personal definition of a hero. Is the person who wins always the hero, or is it the person who conducts him or herself with grace and compassion to humanity? Is it more noble to be big and tough, or kind and humble? Jason may be seen as more of a celebrity to many people today, rather than a hero. One cannot question his great accomplishment, but one should also take into account his character and intentions.
