veiled in allegory

Freemasonry developed in England during the Eighteenth century. Masonic exposures document the progressive changes from the two degrees of occasional lodges of free and accepted masons to organised Grand Lodges with three degrees. Today most Grand Lodges publish the details of their ceremonies. It is difficult to understand how anyone could consider freemasonry to be either ancient or secret.

Freemasonry presents the timeless virtues of honesty, integrity, and compassion in the form of allegories about stone masons from the King James Bible. The working tools of stone masons are used by the Prophets to illustrate their ethical exhortations.

The original two degrees, entered apprentice and fellowcraft were modelled on the Guilds. Later the allegories were reorganised into three degrees.
